Short Bio
Michael Lysander Fremuth, born in 1979, from Cologne (Germany) Studied Law at the University of Cologne, specialising in public international law, European law, human rights, philosophy of law and state theory Worked for the Deutscher Bundestag (national parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany) in Berlin, the European Commission (DG Competition), Brussels and the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in New York In 2010, he obtained his doctoral degree. For his thesis on the supranationality of the European Union, he was awarded the University of Cologne’s prize for outstanding academic achievements. Michael Lysander Fremuth obtained his habilitation degree in 2017 with a thesis on the impact of globalisation on the concept of statehood and sovereignty. He has an authorisation to teach (venia legendi/venia docendi) in public law, including state theory as well as public international law and European law. Visiting scholar in the US, Russia, South Africa and Turkey. Lecturer, chair representative and guest professor at the German universities in Bayreuth, Fribourg and Trier and the Freie Universität Berlin.
Fremuth is co-founder and chair of the United Nations Association of Germany (UNA-Germany, DGVN) in North Rhine-Westphalia, member of the Federal Board of Directors of UNA-Germany and worked on the specialised committee on international affairs in the German branch of Amnesty International. He is also spokesperson of the working group on law on flight and immigration of the Deutsche Vereinigung für Internationales Recht (German branch of the International Law Association). Recently, he has been appointed a member of the Committee on Migration of the International Law Association. He is also member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Human Rights Institutes.
