On October 3, 2024, Prof. Dr. Constantin Hruschka presented key functional conditions for fair and efficient asylum procedures, illustrated by the innovative Swiss asylum model, as part of a workshop discussion. The findings of the project “Balancing Fairness and Efficiency in the Asylum Process: Comparing and Evaluating Fast-Track Procedures” make it clear that both the human rights compliance of the system and the political will to involve all relevant actors are of central importance for the sustainability of a solution that also outlasts conflicting political interests. The need to create a consensus-oriented framework for action and to proactively promote cooperation between the divergent actors was particularly emphasized. During the discussion, Prof. Hruschka, together with students and researchers from the University of Vienna as well as experts in Austrian asylum practice, reflected on the influence of the Swiss legal tradition on the feasibility of the project and highlighted possible parallels and differences to similar projects in other EU countries, especially Austria.
